Sometimes it’s about the color
In May, the fabulous Robin Bergdoll showed us how to make a Black Manhattan and a French Gimlet and she’s BACK to show us how to make two new colorful cocktails that are perfect for hot summer evenings!
The Monarch Cocktail
Here’s what you’ll need if you want to mix along!
2 ounces dry gin
1 ounces Lillet Rosé
1/4 ounces pamplemousse liqueur
1 dash Peychaud's bitters
1 grapefruit peel twist
Notes from Robin: Seriously the Kirkland Gin at Costco is beautifully dry, but of course there are many other dry gins available. I would not use an herbaceous gin like Hendricks.
Empress Gin and Tonic
Here’s what you’ll need if you want to mix along!
1 1/2 to 2 oz Empress 1908 Gin
Elderflower tonic (I use Fevertree)
Ice sphere
Notes from Robin: This goes from indigo to pinkish purple and is scientific! Tonic, and/or citrus will create a chemical reaction… I don’t think using an elderflower liqueur, like St. Germain, and fizzy water will give you the reaction. It will, of course, lighten up the indigo color and give you the same flavor.

But first, a brief Sailboat tour
Before we get to mixing beautiful, colorful cocktails, I’ll give you a quick tour around our new floating home with sails!
My husband and I have been nomads since early 2020, traveling the country in our 5th wheel RV and seeing what there is to see on our motorcycle. A couple of weeks ago, we added a sailboat to our modes of transportation and moved on board for the rest of the summer.
So before we make cocktails, I’ll give you a quick tour. And stick around until the end for a toast up top!
