What a great read! I had to chuckle over your sailing experiences. There are some people who just don't have a filter when they open their mouths. There are so many labels I would like to put on people that think they way they do. Is it arrogance, jealousy, stupidity, snobbish, all of the above? I have seen this so many times in different areas of material possessions. Cars, clothes, jobs, homes. You name it. You were smart to walk away. You can't argue with a brain like that. I also smiled when you wrote everyone in Michigan owns a boat, which is close. I think of everyone living in Colorado must own skis. Ha! The recipes make my mouth water. I love, love salmon. :)

Ha! Almost everyone in Colorado does own skis! Except us! Both Steve and I were born in Colorado and we never learned to ski! We felt like we were the only ones. I think we were meant for the water. :-)

The fisherwoman was a trip! She just went off! And, who knows? She may have good reason to dislike sailboats. Maybe some of them are assholes. I have no idea but what I do know is that we do our best to steer clear of them! :-)

“Don’t have to participate in every argument I’ve been invited to” - I think this is my new motto! LOVE that! What a beautiful summer you’ve had learning to sail and the intricacies of navigating past the channel hogs, lol. And now that lemon mascarpone is calling my name…

Haha! Excellent! It really has been a beautiful summer, fishing boats and all. :-) I didn't have time this week to take a photo, but that lemon mascarpone cream is delicious over a bowl of fresh berries or pineapple and mango. If you try it, let me know what you think.

"I might be new to sailing, but I’m not new to being a human and I know I don’t have to participate in every argument I’ve been invited to."

OMG if only I could figure out how to actually learn this lesson . . .

Have you read Tania Aebi's "Maiden Voyage"? You might enjoy it . . . and Ann Vanderhoof's "Embarassment of Mangoes", which you'll also enjoy as a foodie!

OMG you mentioned my blog post! Thank you - how lovely! (your photos show that you, too, have experienced a number of Pas de Suckage moments aboard. Ahhh)

I think the potatoes went especialy well with the salmon because of the texture contrast. Which, if I spend any time thinking about it, is also the way to thinking about a beautifully balanced life. Texture.

Thank you for the book recommendations! I just ordered both of them! They will make fabulous reads this winter when the boat is out of the water and we are dreaming of warmer days and our next season of sailing. Also, I ordered This Old Boat after you mentioned it in one of your latest posts and it came in yesterday. It looks like a fantastic resource to have on hand. So thank you for that as well!

And now you've given me something so interesting to ponder... Texture.

I did a video once (I had a weekly food video series (Tasty Thursday) on YouTube for 6 years . . . oh my) where I talked about visual texture (as well as mouthfeel) - that particular example was with carrot curls in salad, IIRC. Maybe it's especially on my mind because fresh crisp stuff is harder to come by (other than cabbage) and so much of what we're eating is not exactly crunchy. Just a bit makes a huge difference. A few shreds of cabbage or a few roasted pumpkin seeds on a black bean taco, or a forkful of vinegar-dressed coleslaw on the doubles last night.

I always read your posts top to finish, today I got a little giddy seeing you gave me a shout out, and liked my recipe - talk about adding wind to your sails. Thank you Rebecca 🥰

And I will also add your lemon mascarpone, will be making an appearance at our table in the near future!

This was so good Rebecca. I laughed out loud at your Herculean effort to pick your battles and cried over the polish holocaust victim. And so many lovely dishes to choose from! Thanks for the great read. 💗

Ah, the neverending high school cliques! I could write a similar piece about trail runners and mountain bikers…and I'm both!
