Over the past couple of weeks, the temperatures in Michigan have jumped by 30 degrees! Summer has arrived, and with it, a weekly (sometimes daily) ice cream habit. There are worse things! There’s a great ice cream shop just down the street from the marina where we keep our sailboat, but more and more I opt to make it at home.
Homemade ice cream is just so easy to make and gives me complete control over the ingredients and flavors. This recipe starts with a rich custard base flavored with Matcha powder, vanilla, and a hint of almond extract. It’s cool and refreshing, and exactly the right thing for a hot summer day.
Recipe Notes:
I used the Ninja Cremi ice cream maker to make the matcha ice cream you see in these photos. Regardless of the kind of ice cream maker you use, this matcha ice cream is smooth, creamy, and the perfect thing to help us beat the summer heat.
You don’t even have to have an ice cream maker to make this ice cream. Pour it into a loaf pan, cover with plastic wrap, and freeze for at least 24 hours. It won’t be quite as creamy as it is when you run it through an ice cream maker, but it will still be absolutely delicious!
As you’d expect from homemade matcha ice cream, the matcha flavor really comes through in this recipe. So it’s important to use high quality matcha powder. The kind I love more than an other is Pique Sun Goddess Matcha Powder. It’s 100% organic, ceremonial-grade & screened for purity.
Also try Pique Sun Goddess Matcha Powder in these Matcha Shortbread Cookies!
They are buttery, tender, and full of bright citrus flavor. Made with high-quality matcha powder, they have the perfect balance of earthy, sweet, and tart and a delicate texture that makes them hard to stop eating. If you’re looking for an easy spring cookie recipe that feels a little elegant and a little unexpected, these citrusy matcha shortbread cookies check all the boxes.
Also, isn’t that bright green color just gorgeous????

Yum! I love that we are both on a matcha kick this week!
