I wonder if there's a use for the asparagus halves you chuck out. Obviously the woody sections are a no-go, but I've found the natural breaking point leaves a lot of excellent asparagus still on the stalk.
I sometimes save the stalks in the freezer then cook them into vegetable broth, or cook them in broth until they are very, very soft and then puree them into asparagus soup.
